Investing in the Riviera Maya
The Riviera Maya is a perfect place to invest for those looking for sustainable yields(6-8% annual ROI and 8% appreciation), awesome vacations, and easy flight access. Starting in the 1970s, Cancun, then a quiet barrier fishing island, was intentionally developed by the Mexican government as a premier global tourist destination. Today, it has a population of close to 1 million people and is one of the most visited tropical destinations in the world. After the success of Cancun, Playa del Carmen with Cozumel started expanding as a top tourist destination in the 1990s. Tulum followed in development shortly after that.
The Mexican government continuously invests in the region through infrastructure, safety, and international and domestic tourism advertising. Recently, Tren Maya and the Tulum Airport are two large key examples of Mexico’s continued effort in developing the area. Every year more and more visitors arrive to the area and more and more direct flights from the United States, Canada, and Europe are added to the airports. During the decade of 2010-2020 Playa del Carmen alone had 100% increase in population starting at 149,923 and ending at 304,942!

The hotel paradigm is also shifting with less people opting for time shares and more folks chosing vacation memberships and off-resort authentic experiences. Many condominiums and private villas allow tourists to have the amenities similar to the resorts but with a more natural and exclusive appeal. The Riviera Maya is much more than a tropical climate with white sand beaches. It’s an area is filled with ancient historical and archeological sites such as Chichen Itza, Coba, and the Tulum Mayan Ruins. In addition to that, it has world-class snorkeling and diving thanks to its location near the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef in the Caribbean Sea. Lastly, the local cuisine is top notch with Mexico consistently ranking among the top countries in the world!
